DIY Cupcake Bath Bombs, Super Easy Recipe

DIY Cupcake Bath Bombs with Pink Frosting

I’ve been making bath bombs for a while, and I’ve posted a few homemade bath bomb recipes, including one for oatmeal coconut oil bath bombs, and one for bath bombs without citric acid. Recently, I decided to up my bath bomb making game, and gave DIY cupcake bath bombs a try. I’m so glad I did. DIY cupcake bath bombs smell amazing and look good enough to eat. I have to keep telling my little one that they are not real cupcakes, but are bath bombs that we use in a bath.

DIY cupcake bath bombs are pretty easy to make. They are made in two steps. First you make the base of the cupcake bath bombs, then you make the yummy looking frosting on top.

DIY Cupcake Bath Bombs

Prep Time: about 45 minutes

Yields: 5 cupcake bath bombs

  1. Baking Soda – 1 cup. I use Arm & Hammer Baking Soda. Any other brand of baking soda will work.
  2. Sea Salt – 1/2 cup. I use Trader Joe’s Fine Crystal Sea Salt. Another brand will work as long as it has fine, not coarse, crystals. You can also substitute sea salt with epsom salt or pink Himalayan salt.
  3. Citric Acid – 1/2 cup. I use Alpha Chemicals Food Grade Citric Acid. You can usually find Ball Brand Citric Acid in a plastic jar in the canning section of a supermarket.
  4. Coconut Oil – 4 tablespoons. I use Trader Joe’s organic virgin coconut oil. Another option is Viva Naturals Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil.
  5. (Optional) Lavender Essential Oil – 10 drops. I use Now Foods Lavender Essential Oil.
  6. (Optional) Orange Essential Oil – 20 drops. I use Now Foods Orange Essential Oil.
  7. Meringue Powder – 3 tablespoons. I use Wilton Meringue Powder. You can also try another egg white substitute.
  8. Powdered Sugar – 3/4 cup. I use an electric spice and coffee grinder to grind my own powdered sugar. You can also buy confectioners sugar (same as powdered sugar) in a supermarket.
  9. Red Mica – about 1/4 teaspoon. Be sure to use cosmetic-grade red mica.

Powdered Sugar in a Bath?

I use powdered sugar to make the frosting for these DIY cupcake bath bombs. This means that when you drop a cupcake bath bomb into your bath, there will be some sugar in your bath. Some people are concerned that bathing in water that has sugar causes yeast infections. I read up on this, but found no credible source that confirms this belief.

Instead, according to the Office on Women’s Health (OWH), part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), anyone can get an yeast infection, but the risk increases if you:

  • are pregnant;
  • are diabetic, and your blood sugar is not under control;
  • use a hormonal birth control that has higher doses of estrogen;
  • douche or use vaginal sprays;
  • take antibiotics, such as amoxicillin or steroid medicines; or
  • have a weakened immune system.

Other websites, such as websites for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Mayo Clinic, also give similar information on possible risk factors.  None of them say that bathing in water that has sugar causes or increases a person’s risk of having an yeast infection. In fact, sugar is added to many bath and body products, like sugar scrubs, bath and shower gels, and all natural body soap. After some digging, I am convinced that using powdered sugar to make the frosting for these DIY cupcake bath bombs is fine.

What do you think? Leave me a comment to let me know your thoughts on using powdered sugar to make the cupcake bath bomb frosting.

How to Make DIY Cupcake Bath Bombs (Step 1)

I’ve posted a Youtube video on how to make these adorable DIY cupcake bath bombs.

  1. To make the base, use a whisk to mix all the dry ingredients together. Mix 1 cup of baking soda, 1/2 cup of sea salt, and 1/2 cup of citric acid.
  2. Add 4 tablespoons of coconut oil, and mix it into the dry ingredients.
  3. (optional) If you want your bath bombs naturally scented, add essential oil. I like to add about 10 drops of lavender essential oil, and 20 drops of orange essential oil.
  4. Spray 5 spritzes of water or witch hazel into the mixture. Mix the ingredients well.
  5. Mold the base of the DIY cupcake bath bombs. I like to use a plastic measuring cup, but you can also use a muffin tin, or any other mold that’s shaped like the bottom of a cupcake.
  6. Tightly pack the bath bomb mixture into the mold, then turn the mold upside down and tap it. I like to use a small measuring cup to tap. A spoon will work too. The vibration from the tapping will loosen and release the bath bomb from the mold.
  7. Set the DIY cupcake bath bomb base aside and move on to making the frosting.

How to Make DIY Cupcake Bath Bombs (Step 2)

  1. To make the DIY cupcake bath bomb frosting, use an electric whisk to mix 3 tablespoons of meringue powder and 4 tablespoons of hot water.
  2. When the mixture is fluffy and foamy, then add 3/4 cup of powdered sugar. It’s a good idea to add the powdered sugar slowly, and whisk the mixture between adding additional powdered sugar.
  3. When the frosting can form firm peaks, whisk in 1/4 teaspoon of red mica. You can also try using food coloring.
  4. Next use a piping bag with a tip to pipe the pink frosting onto the DIY cupcake bath bomb base. If you don’t have these items, check out Youtube. It has a ton of videos on how to make your own piping bag and piping tips.
  5. Fill the piping bag with bath bomb frosting, and pipe it onto the bath bomb base. Start piping in the middle. Then go around the middle, while building the frosting up into a nice peak.
  6. (optional) I like to add some sprinkles to give the cupcake bath bombs extra sparkles.
  7. Finally, it’s a good idea to let your cupcake bath bombs dry for 3 to 4 days before use.

That’s it! That’s how you make your very own cupcake bath bombs. They look absolutely adorable, just like real cupcakes. Also, because these bath bombs are made with coconut oil, lavender essential oil, and orange essential oil, they smell divine. They have a sweet, floral, and citrus aroma, which will sure to enhance any bath.

    Can you wrap these with the powder sugar topping, or does the top harden like the actual bath bomb? I didn’t see any pictured wrapped in a cellophane or bag.
    thank you

    Does all icing not go gloopy or sticky in the water?

      Good question, Louise. The icing on the cupcake bath bomb does melt when it’s in warm bath water, but because the icing isn’t much compared to the tubful of water, it shouldn’t turn the water gloopy or sticky, maybe just a bit milky. Hope the above helps!

    Hi there I’ve just tried this recipe. Just wondering how long it takes for the meringue icing to harden as usually you cook them in the oven to harden. Thanks

      Hi Jaclyn, once you combine meringue powder and hot water, use an electric whisk to whip the mixture at high speed for about 5 minutes. Then slowly add your powdered sugar while continuing to whip. Your bath bomb frosting should become harder and ready to be piped onto your bath bomb base after another 5 minutes of whipping. Hope this helps. Please let me know how it goes.

      Hi Christina, you can use another liquid oil, such as sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, olive oil, or sunflower oil, as a substitute for coconut oil. I hope you’ll give this cupcake bathbomb recipe a try. Please let me know how it goes. 🙂

    Do you have to let the base of the cupcake dry before you put the frosting on? Thank you

      Great question, Mari. You don’t have to let the base dry before putting the frosting on. As long as you packed the base tightly and it can retain its shape out of the mold, you can pipe the frosting right on top of it. Please keep me posted on how you like the recipe.
