Calming Lavender Body Oil, Make Your Own

calming lavender body oil

I am inspired to create a calming lavender body oil after a recent trip to Seven Oaks Lavender Farm. The farm is in Catlett, Virginia, about 50 miles west of Washington, D.C. This family run farm has about an acre of french lavender plants. During the summer months, you can visit and cut your own lavender. We visited the farm in late June, when the lavender was in full bloom. With scissors in hand, we meandered in the field of lavender.  We cut stems after stems of beautiful and fragrant lavender. My 3-year-old did her part. She found and cut a ton of stems that we eventually turned into a lavender bouquet. If you have never been to a lavender farm, please consider it. It makes a nice little family getaway.

Our little country outing has inspired me to create something luxurious with our hand picked lavender stems. What can be more luxurious for our body than body oil! Here is a super easy, super simple recipe for calming lavender body oil. Give it a try, you will love it. It smells divine, and it’s oh so moisturizing. Ok, I know what you are thinking. You are thinking, but I don’t have any hand picked lavender stems. Don’t worry, lavender stems are an optional ingredient for this calming lavender body oil. To get the amazingly fresh and pleasant scent of this calming lavender body oil, we will use pure lavender essential oil.

Lavender’s health and medicinal benefits are well known, and well documented.  According to WebMD, lavender is “used for restlessness, insomnia, nervousness, and depression.”  Some people have used lavender for “migraine headaches, toothaches, sprains, nerve pain, sores, and joint pain.” I always keep a bottle of pure lavender essential oil around.

For me, lavender essential oil is effective in preventing an full-on migraine headache. It can also minimize stress. Whenever I feel the onset of a headache or tension in my neck or shoulders, I run to my pure lavender essential oil. I would take in a few deep breaths of lavender essential oil’s calming scent. I would also put a few drops of lavender essential oil on my fingertips and gently massage my temples. It works like magic every time. Give pure lavender essential oil a try the next time you are getting a headache or feeling stressed. You’ll be amazed.

You will need two basic types of ingredients to make this calming lavender body oil. You need a carrier oil or a carried oil blend, and lavender essential oil or a lavender essential oil blend.

This recipe will make approximately 2 fluid oz (4 tablespoons) of calming lavender body oil. This calming lavender oil is very nourishing, 2 fluid oz should last you a month or so.

  1. Carried Oil – 4 tablespoons.  Carried oil can be any vegetable oil. I prefer to use a light carried oil blend of organic sunflower oil (3 tablespoons) and organic virgin coconut oil (1 tablespoon). I use light carried oil because I don’t want the carried oil to overpower the natural scent of the pure lavender essential oil. You can get organic sunflower oil from Amazon, or Whole Foods. You can get organic virgin coconut oil from Amazon, or Trader Joe’s. Amazon also has Viva Labs Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, and Nature’s Way Extra Virgin Organic Coconut Oil.
  2. Lavender Essential Oil – 20 drops. I use Now Foods Lavender Essential Oil. You can also use Organic Lavender Essential Oil.
  3. Orange Essential Oil (optional) – 10 drops. I use Now Foods Orange Essential Oil. You can also use Organic Orange Essential Oil. I’ve found that the scent of orange and clove essential oil complements lavender essential oil well. But you can absolutely stick to using only lavender essential oil.
  4. Clove Essential Oil (optional) – 4 drops. I use Now Foods Clove Essential Oil. I haven’t been able to find an organic clove essential oil on Amazon. If you know one, let me know PLEASE!!
  5. Dried Lavender Stems (optional) – 1 to 2 stems. Dried lavender stems are totally optional. Their main purpose is to make the calming lavender body oil look pretty in a glass container. I used the lavender steams we cut during our little country outing to Seven Oaks Lavender Farm. You can get dried lavender stems from Amazon. You can also use dried lavender buds, but the lavender buds will float on top of the calming lavender body oil. I don’t like how that looks, but that’s just me.
  6. Dried Calendula (optional) – 10 to 15 petals. I use Starwest Organic Calendula Petals. For a smaller quantity, you can try Azure Green Calendula Flowers. The calendula flower petals are totally optional too. Like the dried lavender stems, I add the petals to make the calming lavender body oil look pretty. Unlike the dried lavender buds, the calendula flower petals won’t float to the top of the calming lavender body oil. They will float in the calming lavender body oil.
  7. Glass Container(s). I use a 10 ml roller glass bottle. If you follow my recipe, you will be able to fill about 6 roller glass bottles. Another option is use a 2 fluid oz amber glass spray bottle or a 2 fluid oz cobalt blue glass spray bottle.

How to Make Calming Lavender Body Oil

  1. Melt your coconut oil.  Coconut oil tends to be in a semi-solid form in room temperature. I usually melt coconut oil in a double-boiler (this link teaches you how to create your own double-boiler).
  2. Mix coconut oil with sunflower oil.
  3. Add essential oil: lavender, orange (optional) and clove (optional).
  4. Mix all ingredients well.
  5. (Optional) Add dried lavender stems and calendula flower petals to your container(s). I like the roller glass container, because it’s narrow. It will keep the dried lavender stems upright.
  6. Lastly, enjoy your calming lavender body oil!

That’s it! I told you, it’s shockingly easy to make your own calming lavender body oil. So give it a try. It will nourish your body. Its natural lavender scent will calm your mind. Its medicinal properties will relieve your stress. So, will you be giving this simple yet amazing calming lavender body oil recipe a try? I’d love to hear all about your creation. So reach out!

If you want an organic clove oil look into doTerra. Their oils are pure, therapeutic grade. I’ve been using them for years and there’s nothing like them!
