Make Your Own Whipped Shea Butter

Whipped Shea Butter

Do you have super dry and itchy skin? I did, especially during those harsh winter months, when moisture evaporates from our skin more quickly than during warmer months. My hands and feets used to get so dry that they would crack and bleed. I had to mentally prepare myself for the sharp pain that I would feel every time I was about to wash dishes, bathe my little one, or myself. It was pure agony. Luckily, a number of DIY products, like whipped shea butter, have helped me and my dry skin a great deal. Whipped shea butter is one of my favorite moisturizers, because it not only helps my skin retain its moisture, it also heals cracked skin.

Shea butter, also known as butyrospermum parkii, is renowned for its rich and nourishing properties. People have used shea butter to keep skin healthy, supple, and moisturized for centuries. Shea butter is extracted from the nuts of shea trees, which are indigenous to a number of west African countries. Studies have shown that shea butter has anti-inflammatory properties that can be used to soothe pain, reduce swelling, disinfect wounds, and treat skin problems. Human clinical studies have shown that shea butter is effective in moisturizing and treating dry, itchy, and cracked skin, which are symptoms of hand dermatitis or hand eczema.

Pure shea butter is solid in room temperature, with a dense texture. Compared to pure shea butter, whipped shea butter is lighter, fluffier, and creamier. Many people buy whipped shea butter, but you can also make your own quickly and easily. All you need are a few all natural ingredients and about 30 minutes. Want to know how to make an all natural whipped shea butter? Read on!

Whipped shea butter is made with pure shea butter and a liquid oil, and it goes on your skin easily, leaving it silky smooth. The liquid oil makes the shea butter less dense and easier to whip. You have many options when it comes to liquid oil. I use organic hemp oil, because it’s effective in treating a number of skin issues. Hemp oil strengthens skin, making it better able to resist bacterial, viral and fungal infections. You can also use another skin loving oil, like avocado oil, argan oil, sweet almond oil, or jojoba oil.

Whipped Shea Butter

Prep Time: about 30 minutes
Yields: approximately 3 oz of whipped shea butter

Because this recipe doesn’t include any synthetic preservatives, it’s best to make a small batch of whipped shea butter, and use it within a month or two after making it.

  1. Shea Butter – 2 oz (about 1/3 cup). My favorite shea butter is Raw Unrefined Shea Butter. I also like Sky Organics Unrefined Shea Butter, and Molivera Organics Raw Shea Butter. You can also try Radha Beauty Unrefined Shea Butter.
  2. Hemp Oil – 1 oz (about 1/6 cup). I use organic hemp oil. You can use another liquid oil, like argan oil (for mature skin), avocado oil (for dry skin), sweet almond oil (for oily to normal skin), or jojoba oil (for sensitive skin).
  3. (Optional) Vitamin E – 5 drops. I like NOW Foods E-Oil. You can also try organic vitamin E oil. Vitamin E is an antioxidant, which helps to extend the shelf life of your whipped shea butter.
  4. (Optional) Essential Oil – 15-20 drops. I like NOW Foods Lavender Essential Oil. You can also try NOW Foods Bergamot Essential Oil, or Ylang Ylang Essential Oil.
  5. (Optional) Empty Containers – Ball brand glass jars work very well.
  6. Electric Whisk – I use Proctor Silex Hand Mixer. Other hand mixers/electric whisks work too. You can’t make whipped shea butter without a whipping tool.

How to Make Whipped Shea Butter

1. Place shea butter and hemp oil (or another liquid carried oil, like argan oil, avocado oil, sweet almond oil, or jojoba oil) in a ceramic or glass container. It’s a good idea to use a deep container, because shea butter increases in volume when whipped.

2. Mix the butter and the oil with a silicone whisk. Be sure to mix it very well.

3. Whip the shea butter and hemp oil using an electric whisk / hand mixer. Whip the mixture for about 10 minutes or until you have fluffy whipped shea butter. The longer you whip, the lighter (in color and texture) the whipped shea butter becomes.

4. (Optional) Add vitamin E oil and lavender essential oil (or another essential oil). Whip the mixture using an electric whisk / hand mixer for another minute or two.

5. Finally, scoop your whipped shea butter into a glass container, and your very own whipped shea butter is ready for use.

That’s it! You can make your own all natural, super nourishing whipped shea butter that will moisturize your skin, and keep it supple even through those harsh winter months. This simple whipped shea butter recipe uses 2 all natural ingredients: shea butter, and a liquid oil. I use hemp oil, but another liquid oil, like argan oil (for mature skin), avocado oil (for dry skin), sweet almond oil (for oily to normal skin), or jojoba oil (for sensitive skin), works too.

Some people first melt the shea butter and liquid oil in a double boiler, then whipping the mixture into whipped shea butter. This recipe doesn’t use heat, because if heat is used, the whipped shea butter might not retain all the medicinal and healing properties found in its raw, unrefined ingredients.

If you are ready to say goodbye to super dry and itchy skin, then give this simple DIY whipped shea butter recipe a try. You will be amazed at how easy it is to make and how silky smooth it will leave your skin. I’d love to know what you think about this whipped shea butter recipe. So, please reach out and let me know! I’ve been making various versions of this basic recipe for a few years now. This whipped shea butter has been a life saver for me. I have such dry skin and our winters are terrible cold and dry. My eczema was out of control until I added this to my routine. The texture is so satisfying!

Great recipe! Id been buying a facial whipped moisturizer with shea and olive oil. Great project, not great price tag. Glad to find this! I used calendula infused olive oil I made recently and a drop of patchouli. It looks and smells like the other pricey product!!
